A SIDE OF RICE

My show is simply me, Nicholas Rice, telling the stories I've acquired over seventy years. I'm a nice Jewish guy -- an actor, writer, teacher, martial artist, lover, father, and friend. BOOKMARKS, a follow-up to storyteller Corin Raymond's 2011 monologue Bookworm (a performance "at once intimate, openhearted, and evangelical" - The Georgia Straight), is poignant memoir, a feast of word-fun, and yet another evangel of book-magic -- of books encountered, lost, and found, and the secret paths they travel in the world. Bulfinch's Mythology

In 1850s Boston, confirmed bachelor Thomas Bulfinch, whose translations of Greek/Roman myths were the standard for 100 years in the West, was otherwise known for his virulent anti-homosexuality activism. He published one other book - a memorial to his deceased younger student, Matthew, beside whom he had himself buried. Bulfinch's Mythology compares Bulfinch's unnameable desires with his eviscerated translations. Myth, mime, and theatre coalesce to tell the story of what was lost in translation.

Fringe All-Access: It Happened During the Quarantine

The year is 2020. The pandemic hits. Stories were rewrote and destroyed. Couples who were seen as perfect, broke up. LGBTQ+ youth who found safety in the world got locked in their houses with their conservative relatives. Families that were physically distanced, were brought closer together. The whole world learned that despite our differences, we were all in it together. It may sound unrealistic or untrue, but I guarantee: it all happened during the quarantine.

This is a story about migration, import food stores, and the many ways that places we love can hurt us. How does a diaspora begin evaluating what has been lost, how to conjure it up, and how to say goodbye? In the process of healing from displacement, nothing is ever fully familiar and power structures enforce ongoing loss over time. What solutions can one accept?

The whole world learned that despite our differences, we were all in it together. It may sound unrealistic or untrue, but I guarantee: it all happened during the quarantine.

The Disney Delusion

Comedian Leif Oleson-Cormack pushes confessional comedy to its limits in this show about a methodically moronic plan to double-down on unrequited love through a disastrous trip to Disneyland. Featuring criminal acts, surgically-altered sugar daddies, Sinatra impersonators, and a cynically-charged "coming out", this (unfortunately) true story is not to be missed. "4 1/2 stars...the best thing I've seen so far at the Fringe." - The Edmonton Journal
